Practicing Self Care & Why My FIERCE 40th Birthday Vacation Was Necessary

I just got back from the most amazing Mexican vacation. My family (a group of 20) and I traveled to Mexico for 7 days to celebrate my 40th birthday. The vacation was everything I’d hoped it would be and more. As someone who works (A LOT), my birthday vacation was one that I was anticipating and very glad I took. Though I work hard, I am a firm believer that we must also take breaks in order to refuel, refocus, and re-energize ourselves. All work and no play can lead to burn out and in order to perform at our absolute best we must ensure that we are practicing self-care. While I've taken short vacations in the past (trips to Florida, Lake George, & staycations) this was the first real vacation away I've taken in 4 years. It was way overdue and very much needed. To be able to spend quality time with some of the people I love and respect most meant everything to me. Often times we focus on the routine of our everyday lives that we forget what it feels like to really connect with those who love us most. I am so glad that we were able to spend quality time together away from the hustle and bustle of our everyday lives.

While this wasn't my first time in Mexico, it was my first time staying at The Royalton Riviera Maya Cancun Resort & Spa. This place is in a word, amazing! The Royalton was the most perfect resort to celebrate this milestone as everything was impeccable. From the rooms to the food to the service to the activities, everything was top notch. While my husband and I did stay in the Presidential suite (which was absolutely beautiful), there were others in my party who stayed in junior suites whose rooms (though not as big) were as equally beautifully. While staying in a Presidential suite may sound a bit luxurious, as someone who has two young kids (4 yr old and 18 month old) it is absolutely necessary for me to have a spacious room while on vacation. My past experiences traveling with young kids served as learning lessons for what not to do when on vacation (and booking small rooms is a no go for us) We’ve learned that both the kids and I need the extra space if not we’ll all go stir crazy. Kids need space to roam freely and the 1 bedroom Presidential suite provided all the necessities we’re used to. The room was spacious and everything was up to date with flat screen TVs, refrigerator, microwave, fully stocked bar with top shelf liquor. The 24 hour room service was perfect and timely.

We stayed at the Diamond Club and our butlers (one of the perks of staying at the Diamond Club) Jerry and Cesar made sure that all our needs were taken care of. From making our dinner reservations, to making sure our clothes were ironed, to ensuring that my 18 month old always had a full supply of whole milk in the fridge, everything we needed was handled perfectly. I have to say that having Jerry and Cesar reduced my stress levels significantly.

One of the most significant things for me while on vacation is great dining, and as far as all-inclusive resorts go, the Royalton did not disappoint. The food and drinks were absolutely delicious and the staff was so friendly and hospitable. It was some of the best service I've received on vacation. The entire resort was well maintained. In fact, it was spotless and had some of the most astonishing views I’ve ever seen. Our room overlooked the Caribbean Sea and every morning we’d be awakened by the warm rays of the sun peeking through our curtains and the crashing sound of waves. What I loved most, were the different activities they had for all ages. They have a teens club that was perfect for my teenage nieces, a kids club with activities for my 18 month old and 4 year old and at night they have entertainment shows and bands for the adults. They also have an adults only section for those who prefer to not be around children. The Royalton pays attention to details and nothing is overlooked. I’ve stayed at a lot of resorts and this one has been one of the best. If you’re traveling to Cancun I’d definitely recommend this resort. I loved every minute of my stay and will definitely be returning. It was worth every penny we spent; thank you Royalton, for making my birthday celebration a memorable one.
